Happy Indigenous Peoples Day! Yes, I said Indigenous Peoples day, not Columbus. There has been much controversy over the years about whether or not Columbus “discovered” America but one thing is for sure, when he arrived to the Americas, his presents created a genocide through out the “new world” that all but wiped out the population of Native Americans. This fact hits close to home for me because my husband is half native American. His Mother is from the Lakota tribe of South Dakota. By getting to know my husband’s family’s history, I have a more profound understanding of how much an impact Columbus’ massacre created on a once thriving people.
For these reason, I no longer want to acknowledge a holiday that celebrates a man who was the catalyst to so much death and destruction in the Americas. I choose, instead, to celebrate the culture and heritage of the people who populated these land long before Columbus’ arrival.

You may be thinking, “this is a Fashion and food blog, why talk about history”? Well, today (formally known as Columbus day) is one of the biggest sales days in America. And though I want to share some of the sales with you all so that you can partake in a good deal, I also wanted to give a little bit of meaning to the day and spread the word about petitioning to change the name of this day to Indigenous Peoples day federally. So while you partake in some bargain shopping today don’t forget to remember and honor the millions of people who lost their lives because of one man’s “discovery” of a new land.
